KANNASA KAVIKAL

Kannassans are an entity representing an important stage of evolution of Malayalam literature. Kannasa Mission School, which is in the name of Kannassans is an educational institution functioning in a praiseworthy way.
At a time when Sanskrit literature was at the zenith of its fame and popularity, Kannassans gave a new life to Malayalam literary activities.
The word Kannassans denote four persons namely Rama Panicker, Madhava Panicker, Sankara Panicker and Karunesans. Works by Karunesan have not been traced out and hence it is generally assumed that there were, only three Kannassans.
Though lifetime, of Kannassans was 14th and 15th century A.D.; their importance and relevance cannot be underestimated even in the present time of post modernist era. Importance of Kannassans whose literary works acted as catalyst for Malayalam literature to achieve the present standards of development could not be ignored.
Rama Panicker one among the Kannassans came down to Malayinkeezhu. He continued his writing from his seat at Sree Krishna Swamy Temple. His poetic ventures. Ramayana, Bhagvatam, Bharatham and Siva Mahatmyam are not mere translations. They are literary masterpieces having independent characteristics and genuineness.
Ramayanam (Kannassa) is an adoption of Valmiki Ramayanam. Deviating from the usual way of depicting Sree Raman and Sita as super natural entities. Panicker has given them the images of humanistic model man and woman. Before Ezhuthachan wrote Ramayanam Kannassa Ramayanam used to make pious melodious rhymes in the evenings of Kerala households.
